One of the most common causes and by far the worst causes of ringing ear, is load noises. Unlike other causes of this affliction, loud noise results in physical damage to the inner ear. Modern imaging techniques are able to view the nerve and cochlea damage. Surgery for ear damage is always a last resort and dare I say, never ends in a satisfactory result for the patient.

Common high risk professions for tinnitus include, construction, demolition, live performance musicians, manufacturing and strangely enough, acting. On the set of the original Star Trek television series, an explosive charge used in a scene proved too loud for a closed set. The result being ringing ears for both William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, more commonly known as Kirk and Spock.

One of the newest forms of treatment for physical tinnitus is audio retraining therapy in which the patient wears an ear device producing a high pitch audio frequency. This sound closely resembles the patients own ear ringing. When successful, or at least in theory, if this is worn long enough, the brain will learn to tune out that frequency. Shatner was successful in defeating the ringing using such a device.

As a defense to loud noise, the ear may close up causing hearing loss as well as ringing. Some people experience a similar closing when they fly at high altitudes on a commercial airliner. This is a compression effect and is temporary. Because of the similarity in the symptom, a device was developed called the ear popper. This device is held into the ear and discharges a compression pulse. Many tinnitus sufferers have reported success in reopening their closed ears.

White noise has long been the friend of the sufferer trying to sleep. With the common availability of personal listening mp3 players, it is possible to implement a cheap and easy self therapy during the day. Audio editing software is available free on the Internet. Most of these programs can produce a white noise file that you can then load on your i pod like device. Compact disk and mp3 files are also available readily.

Inner ear damage resulting in tinnitus has become very common. Load noises are hard to escape in an industrial world. This damage is often permanent. Always wear ear plugs if you know loud noises are going to be present such as at an auto race. With no guaranteed treatments, prevention is well advised.
