Most of us have, at some point or another, had to sleep with a snoring partner. These sleep partners are no fun, they snore all night long, pokes, prods, shoves, and even loud noises do not wake them from their rather deep sleep! However, today, there are many anti-snoring devices available in the market, so you can opt for any one, and ensure that you get a good night's rest.

There are the mouthpiece devices, which are also called dental appliances, or mandibular advancement splints. They have proved effective for people who suffer from snoring and mild or moderate obstructive sleep apnea. So what are these devices and how do they work? Well, they are small plastic devices, which is worn in the mouth; they prevent the soft throat tissues from collapsing and obstructing the airway. How do these devices work? They work by bringing your lower jaw forward, and by lifting your soft palate. In fact, some anti-snoring devices can even prevent the tongue from falling back over the airway.

You can purchase anti-snoring mouthpieces online or over-the-counter. These mouthpieces are basically boil and bite devices in which the plastic provided should be softened with warm water before placing into the mouth. You will then bite on the appliance, which will create a mold of your jaw. You can try this option to see if this solves your snoring problem. It might be non-effective in treating snoring and sleep apnea problems.

Some of these anti-snoring devices include the AveoTSD (which is a tongue-stabilizing device, made from soft silicone. This works by holding the tongue forward during sleep, thus keeping the airways open). The Nose Breathe Mouthpiece For Heavy Snorers (helps you breathe through your nose). The Oasys Oral/Nasal System (a mandibular repositioner which treats snoring and sleep apnea, it also acts as a nasal dilator to improve breathing). The Pro Snore Control Appliance, an anti-snoring device, which is custom-made and created from an impression of your lower teeth. The Noiselezz Mouthpiece, a plastic device from Denmark that works by holding your jaw forward.

Other anti-snoring devices one could try are the Silencer (which fits on your upper and lower teeth, and holds your jaw forward). The Silent Partner ASD (this positions your lower jaw a little forward). The SnorBan US, this costs much less, and is a mouth guard that you can fit yourself. However, if you are looking for anti-snoring devices that are comfortable to sleep with and more effective, you can do so by visiting a trained professional. These devices are a one-piece device that sits on the upper jaw, custom made for each individual and used to treat snoring, TMJ problems and mild to severe sleep apnea. These anti-snoring devices have been proven effective, with a higher rate if success in patients who are treated.

Studies in Switzerland have found that oral anti-snoring devices can be very effective in treating sleep apnea. Some mild side effects of over-the-counter devices may include mucosal dryness, tooth discomfort, excessive salivation and joint problems. But oral anti-snoring devices have reduced snoring loudness for over 84 percent of the subjects they were tested on.
