Dieters unite with what may be the most glorious dieting tactic known to man, binging. Binging used to be only for the super chunky and proud, but no more. Adding a binge day to an otherwise sound diet is perhaps the best strategy for consistent fat loss.
The biggest hindrance to long term weight loss is a reduced metabolism brought on by reduced calorie consumption. Our bodies, just as they adapted to excessive food consumption by storing fat, so too can adapt to drastic calorie reduction by storing fat. This may seem counterintuitive, and perhaps so. But it is the truth.
You see, when our body receives fewer calories than it needs each day, our bodies will respond initially by shedding fat rather quickly. But unless your diet is the perfect cocktail of nutrition, your metabolism will adjust downward to account for the reduction in calories. This will result in a new balance in bodyweight to food intake, which, unless altered again, will result in a weight loss plateau.
The most devastating aspect of this is that when you deviate from your low calorie diet, even for a day, your body will not be capable of metabolizing the now excessive calorie intake, and you'll put it on as fat immediately. So what was before a normal diet is now excessive.
This horrible pattern of metabolic deterioration can be avoided by instituting the most glorious diet strategy ever, binging. Adding one cheat day a week where any and everything is fair game will break this horrible cycle. It will keep your metabolism from shifting downward, and it will allow you to keep your sanity when you're observing your disciplined diet the rest of the week. You'll feel disgusting from your binge for several days and you won't need to cheat for a week, and you'll know that you only need to last 6 days until the next one.
This tactic however cannot be employed if you are heavily restricting calories. It is essential your normal diet has you eating 5 or 6 times a day, and in healthy quantities of vegetables, fruits, lean meats, and unsaturated fats. Regular eating keeps your metabolism high and steady even if calorie intake is less than calorie expenditure, and it prevents your body from experiencing energy surges and crashes.
When you eat a small meal and then fast for 5 or 6 hours your body will go into starvation mode and get in the habit of holding onto your fat stores. Eating fat and protein regularly will tell your body that you are not starving, and your body will release your fat stores as energy. When your daily diet is marked by healthy and consistent eating, a binge day will be your magic metabolic bullet to keep you losing fat over the long term.
