Whether you or someone you love is evidencing signs of macular degeneration, it can be a frightening time for you. The sense of sight is something that we are very protective of, and when it is being threatened, there is a good chance that you are going to feel as if your body is out of your control. This is why it is very important to make sure that you are going to be getting the information that you need to understand this condition. When you are looking at age related macular degeneration, you'll find that it is important to understand the difference between wet ARMD and dry ARMD.

First, take a look at the symptoms of wet ARMD. When this is the condition that is being diagnosed, one very common symptoms is that objects will look as though they are farther away than they should be, or that they are smaller than they normally are. This can be quite jarring and become increasingly more severe as the disease progresses. The loss of central vision is another symptom of this condition, as is a sudden blind spot that appears. Straight lines that appear wavy are another symptom of wet ARMD.

Then, take a look at dry ARMD. With this condition, you'll find that it can develop a lot more slowly and that it can be something that can be ignored for quite some time. You may suddenly find that you need more light when you are doing close up work or you may realize that words that are blurring in front of you when you try to read. Rather than a sudden loss of vision, you will first notice a more hazy appearance to your vision. You may notice that colors will appear less brightly than they should. As with wet macular degeneration, you will lose site in the central field of your vision, which can become larger and darker as time goes on.

Though both these conditions lead to a worsening of eyesight, it is worth noting that they have very different causes. With wet ARMD, blood vessels in your eyes grow underneath the macula, where the rods and cones that process light are stored. As more blood vessels grow, they are going to interfere with your body's ability to get nutrients to the macula, which will make your rods and cones start to deteriorate. On the other hand, with dry ARMD, waste products are not removed from your rods and cones, and as the waste builds up, the macula will start to deteriorate.

When you need more information on this condition or when you are concerned that it is happening to you, take some time to do your research and to consult with your doctor. The more you know about this condition, the better off you are going to be.
