We have all heard about people who have exploded beyond the limitations of their conditions to become examples of the unlimited power of the human spirit.
It doesn't matter how extraordinary, intense, demanding or difficult a goal is in any area of life; Most goals are achievable with the right strategy and effort. People climb Mount Everest, set world records in running, cycling, lifting weights, and gymnastics, stay awake for 72 hours at a time, or lose an enormous amount of weight in the shortest amount of time.
What makes the people extraordinary, you may think. What drives them to achieve? In essence, these people aren't any different from you or I. They are simply living by the courage and awareness that we can control whatever happens in our lives. They know that while we might not always be able to control the events in our lives, we can always control our response to them, and the actions we take as a result.
Because the true measure of success is not the attainment of the goal, but rather the ability to sustain change across time, context and circumstance.
If you can create a healthy lifestyle for yourself that lasts not months but decades, that you keep up during good times and bad, that's a truly remarkable change. A sustainable change means rather than simply experiencing a great victory, you will be truly fulfilled by your journey.
To create lasting change and fulfillment, we require a psychology and mindset that is based on an ongoing commitment to three principles:
1. Create a Strong Base
2. Challenge and Grow
3. Celebrate and Reward.
Sustainable Change Principle 1: Create a Strong Base
For anything to grow and thrive, we must create a strong base.
Your base consists of two parts:
* Your Psychology and mindset
* Your strategies for creating a healthy lifestyle and healthy habits
To strengthen your psychology and mindset, you will need to challenge your current beliefs and current condition. The stronger mental base will help you be in charge of creating beliefs and emotions that serve you.
While building the foundations for our psychology and mindset, we also need to develop practical strategies to create a healthy lifestyle and healthy habits that can last.
The most important aspect of your Strong Base however, is your commitment. You need to decide that you want to make a change in your life, and you need to be committed to see that change through.
If there's anything you're not happy about, make a decision right now that you're going to change it!
Sustainable Change Principle 2: Challenge and Grow
With a Strong Base in place, you have the foundation, to not only deal with challenges, but to utilize them to grow.
So, when the inevitable challenges arise, you can draw on your base of psychology, emotions, and daily habits to pull you through, Life is not perfection, it is growth. And growth comes from pushing through the challenges and obstacles that are before us to attain the next level.
Whatever you do to consistently create your Strong Base will shape your life and determine whether you meet the challenges you face with courage, faith and determination, or if you allow them to overcome you with fear, frustration and overwhelm.
Finally, all momentum in life is created by celebrating victories. You must set yourself up to win!
Rather than wait to reward yourself after you've lost 30kgs and won the Ironman race, acknowledge your smaller wins along the way. As you celebrate your success, it creates a deeper hunger to build an even stronger base and pull yourself to even greater victory and triumph.
As you celebrate your wins, you will raise your standards for what is possible and the rituals and habits that are necessary to create this sustainable change will become a part of who you are.
