High efficiency particle arresting (or HEPA) filters are the filters used in hospitals to insure the cleanest air possible.

This technology has been so effective that is it now available in homes through heavy duty portable purifiers that contain HEPA filters. But what are they really best at removing from the air? Here are 6 pollutants that they are best at removing.

Household Dust--The bane of man's existence since moving indoors, unfortunately household dust is not something that you can stop, ever. So you need to keep removing it continuously to reduce the amount that you and your family breathe.

Dust originates from small particles of fabrics, dirt and dust from outdoors, small bits of hair and skin, and sometimes minute particles of metal shavings from door hinges.

Dust Mites--Happy to lie in your bed or on bedroom rugs and floors and feed off dead skin cells, mites are one of the most common pollutants found in homes today. They are easily sent airborne when making the bed, walking on the floor, and going about normal daily activities.

Removing them while they are airborne is a safe and non-invasive way to constantly reduce their numbers and the respiratory problems they can cause.

Pet Dander--Dogs, cats, birds, bunnies, ferrets and any other warm blooded pets will produce dander as a natural part of their growth and development. These small particles (invisible with the naked eye) of dead skin contain a protein that can send the bodies of those who are allergic or asthmatic into overdrive with sneezing, coughing, watering eyes, and in some cases difficulty breathing.

Mold and Mildew Spores--Found throughout nature their job outside your home is to decompose materials. Unfortunately they don't know the difference between inside and outside, and if they find a water source in your home in the kitchen, bathroom, or basement, they will start to decompose walls, furniture, and upholstery.

Removing the spores will decrease the number of spores and reduce the possibility of having them damage your home.

Pollen-Pollen results from pollination, and throughout most of the year there is always some sort of pollen in the air. Whether it is from trees in the early spring, grass pollen from spring though fall, or weed pollen till frost, it's out there.

And regardless of how many precautions you take nothing will prevent pollen from entering on air currents as you come and go from your home or office. Trapping pollen of all kind with constant filtration makes indoors a haven from these seasonal irritants.

Germs-It's true that airborne germs, mainly bacteria and virus, are generally smaller than the .3 microns that HEPA filters can remove. The good news is that bacteria and virus usually hitch a ride on other larger pollutants to travel from one host to another.

So by removing household dust, pet dander, mold and mildew spores, and pollen, you are very effectively reducing the number of airborne germs as well. So they are easier to remove than their size might first indicate.

While purifiers that contain HEPA filters are most adept at removing particles, the most effective models have an additional inner filter that can also remove gases, odors, and chemicals.
