Recently there was a senate debate that was televised, as many of them are, about whether or not the FDA should have control over the tobacco industry and all products connected with cigarettes and nicotine. The issue was a lot about flavored nicotine products and whether or not they were being marketed towards children. The debate was also about how cigarettes are advertised and what their packaging should look like.
One senator talked much about how some newer nicotine products, that are thought to be considerably less damaging to the human body than a toxic cigarette that is burned in order to smoke, and how having these products in different flavors will entice children to buy them. As an observation, there are many products that come in multiple flavors, such as alcoholic wine coolers, energy drinks, and even condoms and other sexual products. These items are not sold to minors, they come in flavors, yet no one is accusing them of trying to sell their products to minors. What is the difference with a nicotine product that could possibly entice a smoker to switch to a much less deadly product?
The real question is, if the FDA is so concerned with less damaging nicotine products being banned or outlawed because of their flavors, why in the world is tobacco still allowed to be sold at all? If they are so concerned about letting people know how deadly cigarettes are, why are they still legal when they themselves readily admit how deadly they are? It seems that any logical reasoning would suggest that they should deal with the fact that the way tobacco is manipulated and marketed should be the very first issue addressed. One argument that might be put forth is the fact that people want to be allowed to smoke deadly cigarettes, but what does that really matter? Many people would also like the right to use meth and smoke marijuana too, but since it is so deadly, it is outlawed. Why is the tobacco industry still coddled and allowed to peddle their deadly product at all?
The point is, why is there any debate at all about the fact that some products that are flavored that are much less dangerous, being banned when tobacco is still legal? This appears to be so hypocritical. It is almost like saying you are allowed to stab someone legally and kill them, but you can not stomp their toe. The tobacco industry is going to be allowed to continue to kill people as long as smokers are warned with more deadly looking packaging, but those wishing to market safer, less damaging nicotine products are to be outlawed all together. You figure it out.
