For most people it only takes a few days to get the nicotine from smoking cigarettes out of your system when you stop. This can be the easiest step of the quitting smoking process. The really hard thing to do is finding something else to do with your hands, mouth, and to keep you from thinking about smoking a cigarette constantly. You have become so accustomed to associating so many things with a cigarette, that it comes to your mind many times a day and can leave you with an agitated, unfulfilled feeling each time you do not smoke.

The most common thing people associate with smoking a cigarette is after they have eaten. They are accustomed to having a smoke almost as soon as they have swallowed the last bite. This is almost impossible to do anymore if you are dining in a restaurant because smoking has been banned in almost all of them everywhere. Sometimes a business will not even allow you to smoke in their parking lots anymore. The only way you can smoke if you are out with others is to leave the table, go outside, and get in your car or walk off the restaurant property. This is not enforced at all restaurants. A smoker that eats out often has to be able to control their urge to smoke until they get somewhere they can indulge.

If you can learn to cut out smoking after meals, you have probably taken a giant step in the quitting process. Learn to have a mint after a meal or go for a walk instead. Walking is good because it can also help diminish the impulse to overeat like many smokers trying to quit will do. Overeating is just replacing one bad habit with another and you should avoid this at all cost. Getting a little exercise is a much better option.

Having coffee or alcoholic drinks is another popular time when people smoke. This can be difficult to stop too. The only way to beat this habit is to talk yourself into actually enjoying the flavor of your beverage. When you grow accustomed to what your drink tastes like without a cigarette, you might be surprised at how much better it is. When drinking alcohol, you might be tempted to drink less if you are not smoking. Drinking too much alcohol is also a bad habit to take up while quitting smoking.

Other things you smoke cigarettes while doing is driving and talking on the phone. When you are using the phone, try to hold some other item in your hand besides a cigarette. A pencil or a ball to squeeze could help. When you are driving, make a new rule to not smoke in your vehicle. Clean it up really well, empty the ashtray, and deodorize it. You will begin to like the clean way it smells when you open the door to get in instead of it smelling like a nasty ashtray. These are simple things, but if you can conquer each of them one at a time, your chances of being successful with quitting smoking will be increased.
