The trophoblastic cells change from an aggressive behavior to a non-invasive one, Beard was curious as to what might have triggered the taming of the trophoblastic cells. He delved deeper into the development of the nervous system of the fetus and the endocrine system of both the mother and the embryo as well as the working of the immune system and blood supply.

After years of research, he came up with a final conclusion that the moment the trophoblast cells stop growing and become non-life threatening, life-sustaining organ, the fetal pancreas is activated. The pancreas is a complex bi-organ acting as both an endocrine and exocrine organ. The endocrine pancreas is responsible for releasing hormones into the blood stream that act on distant tissues. The exocrine pancreas, on the other hand, releases glucagons and insulin to regulate blood sugar levels. It produces the various enzymes responsible for digesting proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, which are released into the small intestines.

His further studies on the matter brought him into a conclusion that primary signalling factor in stopping placental growth must be the proteolytic protein-digesting enzymes. And with this, he further hypothesized that if indeed enzymes were responsible for inhibiting the growth of the placenta, then the same enzymes can stop the cancer cells from growing.

However, his theories were deemed absurd during his lifetime. Several years would pass before the fruits of his works were realized. His work was the root of the realization of stem cells.

Stem cells, as it is understood today are the primitive, undifferentiated cells present in every organ. These cells are necessary for the normal physiological replacement of tissues. Yet, these necessary primitive cells which are essential for life has the ability to invade and grow abnormally without proper signalling, and thus resulting to cancer.

Nearly forty years after Beard's death, William Donald Kelly established a similar theory. He treated cancer patients with a complex nutritional therapy based on Beard's enzyme treatment.

Dr, Nicholas Gonzalez, a cancer specialist in New York began a case review on nearly 10,000 patient records of Kelley, and interviewed and evaluated over 500 of Kelley's patients. These patients were diagnosed with advanced cancer and most of whom have enjoyed long term survival and or progressive regression of the disease.

Eventually, Dr. Gonzalez began treating his cancer patients using the enzyme approach with advanced cancer patients based on the work of Beard and Kelley.
