Tea Tree oil has many medicinal and beneficial properties including being an antifungal, antiseptic, and antibacterial as well as an effective treatment for cough and cold and touting cosmetic benefits. Before it is used, tea tree oil is normally cut down to a strength of about 10% purity. If it is used in it's purest form it can cause strong reactions. Nevertheless, even diluted, this oil can still cause reactions, but they are much less common and severe.
This useful oil, also known as melaleuca, is an essential oil that is derived from leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia. This foliage is found in Australia along the coastal areas of New South Wales.
In Australia, it has been used as an antiseptic for a very long time; even before there was scientific proof supporting the benefits. Research in support of the benefits of this substance for skin care have also surfaced recently. It has been found to have antifungal properties and is useful in treating several dermatophytes that are found on the skin. Another use is for controlling dandruff. Studies have shown that a shampoo with 5% tea tree oil is very effective for treating and preventing dandruff. it is also an excellent essential oil for killing Candida (yeast).
This natural, multi-purpose plant is also great for dealing with acne. Studies have shown that matching concentrations of tea tree oil and benzoyl peroxide gave the same results. The oil was a bit slower in taking care of the acne problem, but just as effective and completely natural.
Another use that you might not have thought of is it's effectiveness in dealing with scabies mites. A study has shown that it is actually more effective than other commercial medications for killing these tiny critters off.
One thing you should be very careful of is keeping this remedy away from children as it is toxic when taken internally. Some of the effects of ingested tea tree oil are: vomiting, diarrhea, severe rash, coma, hallucinations, confusion and blood cell abnormalities. Be sure to also keep it away from your pets due to it's potential toxicity.
Also be warned that tea tree oil can be irritating to the skin when not diluted. Do not use this oil inside your ears because it has been shown to cause loss of hearing.
Tea tree is a wonderful essential oil with many uses. Make sure that you exercise caution and also check to make sure you are using it correctly with your local herbal or aromatherapy expert. If you do not have anyone to ask near you, there are always ongoing discussions all over the internet.
