Once upon a time, smoking tobacco products was generally accepted by everyone. So much so that smoking cigarettes, cigars, or pipes could be done in saloons and parlors, in restaurants, and even in libraries or schools. Even prior to usage in industrialized nations, some of our earliest ancestors used this plant in religious rituals or in ceremonies. Then, medical research was conducted on the safety and the side effects of these products on one's health, and the findings were not good. Not good at all.
Simply put, tobacco products are not healthy. Whether it is chewing tobacco, a cigar, or a menthol light cigarette, the results are always the same. These products have been known to cause cancer, respiratory problems, diseases of the heart and lungs, strokes, emphysema, and more. As a result of prolonged use, millions of people die annually and many more succumb to lifelong illnesses. In essence, these people who are afflicted with the latter are suffering a slow and painful death.
Tobacco products may seem harmless at first because it is such a simple item. After all, it is only comprised of the rolling paper and the plant blend. It is, however, the additives that are mixed into the tobacco blend that make cigarettes notorious for causing illness. Reconstituted tobacco is often times added to the tobacco blend, which generally has a higher level of nicotine because of the additives that are added to it as well. Additional ingredients are also blended in with the tobacco mixture to enhance the flavor.
As much as 599 additives are used to produce a single tobacco cigarette, and about 4,000 chemicals can be found in the smoke emitted from the burnt tobacco concoction. Of these 4,000 chemical compounds, 69 of them are officially recognized to cause cancer. In addition, these chemicals can include such toxins as ammonia, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, and various ingredients can be found in cigarettes. Even tar, the same black mixture that is used to pave roads, is found in cigarettes. Under normal circumstances, no one of sound mind would ingest these chemicals, let alone inhale them, but the mental and physical addiction to these tobacco cigarettes is tremendous and quitting doesn't seem like an option at all.
Even with all of the evidence that indicates cigarettes are indeed unhealthy and pose a risk to anyone that is exposed to its secondhand smoke, over 1 billion people globally continue to smoke cigarettes.
