What in the world can you do when you have a mate that absolutely will not stop smoking cigarettes? It can be one of the most frustrating things for a partner that does not smoke. You can love this person to distraction, but hate the fact that they smoke. It might not bother them at all that they are offending you every time they light up if they are a little on the selfish side. Sometimes a partner would really like to stop smoking to make you happy and because they know they should, but they have been unable to quit. For either of these smoking types, it could be up to you to push them into quitting if you want to continue to live with them peacefully and happily.
Addressing this issue with a mate that does not want to quit smoking can be much more difficult and complicated than dealing with a partner that would really like to quit. The stubborn smoker that wants to hang on to their habit will resist your well intentioned efforts at every turn. If this is the case, then you might have to be a little tougher in order to reach your goal. You should be very frank with them about how nauseous their breath makes you feel after they smoke. The breath of a smoker does not bother them much after a while because they are used to it, but it can be very hard for someone else to deal with. Just tell them that you are definitely not kissing them anymore unless they have freshly brushed their teeth and used mouth washed. If they are a romantic type, this will take something from them they enjoy the same way you enjoy clean air.
Speaking of clean air, when you share a home with a smoker, just let them know that they might live there, but so do you. Let them know how unfair it is for you to have to breath their smoke and banish them to the outside. If you are serious about the secondhand smoke you breath, and you should be, then if they really care about you, they will comply with your wishes and smoke outside. This might not be your initial goal, but it is a help to you to get their smoking out of the house. You might suggest that they try using an electric cigarette that can be used inside with no secondhand smoke, is less dangerous for their health, and will allow them to continue to smoke without the smell.
For the partner that would like to stop smoking, you stand a better chance of getting them to quit. You must find ways to help them. You have to be patient with them and not give up if they slip up. They might try using nicotine patches, gum, or other stop smoking aids and these do help some people to quit, but the success rate is not that high. You will have to help break the habits that come with smoking, like smoking at certain times. You might want to join a support group together where others might have suggestions that help. Try to avoid people that smoke, at least for a while. Any little thing that might help them not smoke will be your new job until they can quit.
