Have you ever stood in the line of someones cigarette and tasted the smoke on your tongue or had it go up your nose? If you do not smoke, this will have a nasty taste that will stay with you for a while. The taste of it could make you sick and the smoke that goes up your nose and down your throat could make you choke. This can even happen to a smoker when they happen to be in a room with a lot of other smokers. You could come out of this room smelling like a giant cigarette as the smoke will have gotten into your clothes.
If this has happened to you, then you have been a victim of second hand smoke. You do not have to smoke yourself to be exposed to secondhand smoke. If you are having a get together with family and friends and some of them smoke, try to make them understand that you do not want them to smoke in your home. Tell them they can smoke outside and if they do not agree to this one rule, tell them that they will have to leave. Explain to them that you do not want the smell of smoke in your home or around your children. You might lose some of your friends that smoke and some family might not come around as much, but the health of you and your own family is more important.
The taste of any smoke can become unpleasant and in some cases it can become overpowering. You should avoid cigarette smoke as much as you can. If you are a smoker and this happens to you, think about how you reacted to this situation and do things so that you or your family do not come to be in the line of your smoke. Once you really realize how bad it is to be exposed to secondhand smoke, it might be enough to make you realize how badly you need to quit. It will be hard, but with help you can overcome your habit. You might want to go to a professional to get help with quitting. This help could be your family doctor or a counselor.
When you decide to quit, you probably already know that it is going to be difficult and will take all of the willpower you can muster. Use whatever nicotine products you can that might help you quit using tobacco. You might end up trying several different products and the quitting process might not go very quickly. It can take months for some people to finally quit completely. The main thing is to not give up because every cigarette you do not smoke is a step in the right direction.
