Most women can not stand the thought of not being as clean and fresh as possible in their vaginal area. We are after all, animals of a sort and odors are a natural occurrence that sometimes can not be avoided. Then there are other issues that females must deal with on a regular basis that can cause additional odors such as the monthly menstrual cycle, sex, and pregnancy. Any of these things can cause you to feel less clean than normal. Many women will use a douche after sex or their monthly cycle to cleanse themselves inside in addition to regular external washing. Using a douche while you are pregnant should never be done unless it has been suggested by your obstetrician.
There are some conflicting opinions about whether or not women should douche at all. Some doctors think that it is perfectly fine to douche occasionally while others do not recommend it at all. The reason why douching should not be practiced all of the time is that when the douche cleanses out odors and perhaps particles of blood and semen. It also cleanses away the natural organic and acidic secretions of the vagina that help to fight off infections. This can leave the vagina vulnerable because it can disturb the natural environment inside the vagina.
There are over the counter douches that are scented and sometimes these have been known to cause infections in some women. If you do douche, even occasionally, it is probably better to not use the ones that are scented. The vagina can be very sensitive inside and introducing foreign substances like perfumes and fragrances can cause problems. There are women who use these kinds of douches and never have any problems, but it still might be something you wish to consult with your doctor about before you use them at all.
The body has a way of naturally cleansing the vagina and douching can wash away all of the natural organisms that do this. This can lead to irritation and infection. Many health studies do show that women that douche regularly are more prone to things like yeast infections and even more serious medical conditions such as pelvic inflammation. Even if you have a bad vaginal odor, douching is thought to only disguise the odor, not make it go away.
A really bad vaginal odor could indicate a serious condition like an infection, so you should contact or see your doctor. Some vaginal odor is perfectly normal and cleansing on the outside is usually sufficient to control it. Just remember that you should probably not douche unless your doctor does recommend it. You could be just trading a minor issue like getting rid of a little discharge or smell temporarily for an infection that could last a lot longer.
