If there's one thing in this world that can put a cramp in your style it's a headache. Most likely everyone at some point in their lives has had this troublesome malady. It's not any fun and it makes it nearly impossible to get through your day. Some folks have mild headaches that are merely a nuisance and then there are those who are saddled with headaches that cause dizziness, nausea, sensitivity to light and can leave you bedridden. Regardless of where you lie in the spectrum, it's no fun at all.

The most common remedy for taking care of a headache is the all-encompassing over-the-counter pain reliever. They come in all names and brands and some have anti-inflammatory agents and some do not. They can, however, provide some relief to the symptoms of a headache but after the pain reliever has worn off you're still left with the underlying problem - the organic cause of the headache.

Why do I get headaches?

There are many reasons why people can suffer from headaches. Maybe you skipped breakfast one morning as you rushed out the door for work. Then a few hours later you realize it's lunchtime. You're starting to get a headache now as your blood sugar has dropped significantly because you forgot to fuel it with breakfast in the morning. This is one cause. Or, maybe you stayed up too late the night before and didn't get adequate sleep. This can also cause a headache.

While those are some possibilities, most of the time headaches are associated with having muscle tension in the neck. This tension puts stress and pressure on the joints which in turn cause your head to ache. Endless hours in the same position without significant movement or exercising of those muscles contribute to the tension in this area. The headaches can also be caused by subluxations in the cervical spine that cause the muscles to react to the change. Invariably, the one muscle system will try to compensate for the lack in the other system thereby creating an imbalance.

How can I get rid of my headaches?

There is much hope for headache sufferers. There are simple things that you can start to do immediately that may bring some improvement and function to your neck which will help your head to balance freely and without pain. If you are in front of a computer for many hours or are in a fixed position for a period of time, take a moment to stop and stretch your neck. Daily exercise is another way to keep muscles flexible and pliable. Also make sure you are drinking plenty of water. Inadequate water intake can be another cause of headaches.

There is also another very important resource - that is your chiropractor. Your chiropractor can be in your arsenal of defense against those headaches. Your chiropractor can perform manipulations that will help to increase range of motion and improve function to your neck and head. Many have found chiropractic to provide them with great relief.
