Bad breath or halitosis may be simple as it sounds but it could be very embarrassing and may eventually affect you socially and emotionally. That is why preventing bad breath is always important especially if you are dealing with many people everyday or you are always around many people. But whatever you do, it is very important to put an end to this problem. Here are some simple ways in preventing bad breath.

- Drink plenty of water. Indeed, drinking water has made wonders on our health and it includes getting rid of bad breath. Saliva in the mouth helps eliminate bacteria and other particles of food, and with dry mouth, halitosis can occur, so hydrate your body with enough water.

- Brush your tongue and clean your gums and the roof of your mouth. Preventing bad breath may sometimes mean cleaning these parts of the mouth that we often forget. The tongue, the gums and the roof of the mouth holds bacteria in the mouth that may be the culprit in bad breath. Clean your tongue after brushing your teeth to prevent from getting this breath problem and always include cleaning your gums and the roof of the mouth. The hard to reach areas of the mouth should also be taken cared of.

- Maintain good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth regularly especially after every meal. Brushing alone may not get rid of all food particles in between the teeth so it is also wise to floss regularly. If you have dentures and oral devices on your mouth, make sure also that they are always clean if you put it back on your mouth.

- Pop a gum. You might have noticed that some people wants to pop a gum after a meal. It is not only the mint flavor that helps reduce halitosis. Chewing stimulates the production of more saliva in the mouth, thus creating more protection from bacteria and helps eliminate food particles that may later cause bad breath.

- Take the natural floss. Eating vegetables and fruits, especially the crisp ones like apple, help you get rid of the many food particles that are stuck in between your teeth. This natural floss will not only help clean your mouth but will also help maintain good health generally.

- Quit smoking. Not only will it stain the teeth, smoking can also cause bad breath.

- Eating too much spices such as garlic and onion can also contribute to halitosis. Make sure to brush your teeth every meal and if you cannot brush your teeth after, choose something that is not too spicy.

Preventing bad breath may not however be limited to these ideas. If these simple and natural ways of prevention do not work, it might be the right time for you to see the dentist. Some underlying issues may be at play when there is no amount of prevention can stop cases of halitosis. Do not also rely solely on mouthwash as this will only give you temporary relief but not treating the exact cause of this health problem.
