Teeth whitening gel and other products are used to brighten smiles, making them appear younger and healthier. Usually these products are made with a combination of hydrogen peroxide, carbamide peroxide, sodium perbromate, and sodium percarbonate. Depending on the strength of these ingredients, stains are removed and the teeth whitened. Many times, trays are used that are fit to the upper and lower teeth to hold the gel onto those teeth for a certain amount of time.

Although most people do not experience any problems from the solutions that are used for these procedures, some people do find that they are sensitive and experience some soreness and sensitivity from the whitening gel. However, this is also usually due to having the tray not fit the teeth correctly or the gums coming in contact with the gel for a long period of time. The teeth whitening gel should not touch the lips or gums for long periods of time.

There are many other products instead of gels that can get the job done if there are sensitivity issues at hand. These products contain smaller amounts of hydrogen peroxide, so they wont irritate gums and tissues quite as much as the other products, but they also may not whiten the teeth as well, either. These types of products are usually used at home as maintenance regimens after initial treatment. Many people use whitening trays along with the gels to keep the solutions in place for the necessary time.

There are also some dental bleaching strips that have been around for quite a while such as the Crest Whitestrips. These systems used to take weeks to see results, but the strips that are available now are said to only take a few days to show results. There are many different strips at many different prices that will produce different types of results in different amounts of time. There are also whitening pens that are used with brushes on the ends. These apply the solution to teeth so they are a little bit less messy for some people than other methods.

If no other solution seems more attractive to you, you can opt to make your own teeth whitening gel at home. All you will need is baking soda, glycerin, and hydrogen peroxide, which can be purchased from a pharmacy, drug store, or even a grocery store. Mix one teaspoon of baking soda with 7 drops of glycerin and combine in a small container until you have a paste. Take a small glass of water and add three teaspoons of hydrogen peroxide. Brush your teeth with the solutions and keep rinsing your mouth with the hydrogen peroxide water. There are more recipes for teeth whitening gel that can be found online as well.
