It is hard for a cigarette smoker not to light up whenever they want to and the one place they feel they do have a right to do it is at home. This is true, of course, but it can be hazardous for those that happen to live in the home with them. If the father, mother, or both smokes and the rest of the family, like the children do not, they might as well be if smoking is going on around them. Every time a parent lights a cigarette and smokes inside the house around their kids, it is just like the kids are lighting up too.
This secondhand smoke is especially harmful for infants, those with an already compromised immune system, and the elderly. The smoke can fill their lungs just as if they were the one puffing on the tobacco. The tar that coats the lungs of a smoker also gets inside the lungs of others that are exposed to it. The chemicals in the tobacco, which are cancer causing and deadly, also get inside every one else whether they smoke or not.
The items and surfaces in your home are also coated with a layer of tobacco smoke film. Anytime your family touches these things, they are touching the nasty tobacco residue too. If you have ever taken down a picture that has been hanging on the wall where a smoker lives, you can see the coating of tar on the paint. This is also what a smoker is doing to the inside of your children and anyone else that shares the house with you.
There are solutions for this if the smoker will abide by the rules. Of course, the best thing for everyone including the smoker is for them to quit, but this does not always happen. The most common solution these days since the dangers of secondhand smoke have become so well known, is for the smoker to go outside. They might choose to you the garage or a single room in the home that is well ventilated. This is the only way to keep the smoke from affecting the rest of the family. You will still be likely to have at least some smoke leak into the other rooms even if there is ventilation. The only real solution is to quit or go outside. This is what any one that smokes should do if they really love their family. Just because they smoke, does not mean that everyone else should have to.
