The electronic cigarette was invented in China in 2004 but has only recently started to make headlines here in America. It is a device that could very well revolutionize the way people view smoking. Using no tobacco and depending on electricity, the e cigarette acts, looks, and feels like a traditional tobacco cigarette but does not have all of the harmful side effects. The e cigarette usually consists of three parts: the atomizer, the mouthpiece, and the battery. The atomizer is the heating element, the mouthpiece is where you inhale and where the cartridge with the nicotine or non-nicotine solution is contained, and the battery supplies the energy.
Propylene glycol, nicotine, and natural and artificial flavors are just a few of the ingredients you can typically find in the liquid solution, which typically has about 10 to 20 ingredients. When the e cigarette is turned on, the atomizer heats up the liquid solution and turns it into a harmless vapor, which is then inhaled by the user. The vapor contains no chemicals or nicotine residue, an added benefit for those who might be concerned with secondhand "vape". As of right now, there are no rules governing the usage of these devices and can therefore be used in public locations, even indoors.
The vaporizer is used mostly for those who take medicinal marijuana but do not want to deal with the hassle of rolling up and lighting a joint or who do not want to ingest any harmful compounds typically found in the smoke. The vaporizer works much in the same way that the e cigarette does: the atomizer heats up the herbs that are placed in a funnel-like chamber and then turned into a vapor. The vapor is dispensed into a plastic bag that expands and contracts as vapor is put in or taken out of the bag. The vapor can be inhaled immediately or stored in the bag or a jar for future use.
Although used mostly for marijuana, the vaporizer is also good for other herbs, including tobacco, chamomile, sage, and aloe vera. The vapor produced from tobacco has been found to contain significantly less toxins and chemicals. The device can also be used for cooking. Sometimes, an herb can only be heated up to a certain degree before its flavor is destroyed, and the device can help it achieve maximum potency to be used in cooking.
