There's plenty of heart health benefits of fish oil supplements, but a new study is now posing a warning.
This study has found that a diet high in fat and in particular a diet high in saturated fat foods can cancel the benefits of taking omega 3 fish oils.
There are plenty of well known heart benefits of fish oil supplements. These heart benefits include a reduction in cardiovascular disease and this includes both fatal and non fatal heart attacks as well as a reduction in the risk of strokes.
But if you're eating diet high in saturated fats you may be losing some or all of the benefits of taking those Omega 3 fish oil supplements.
A new study has now come out. It studied rats with heart failure and looked at the correlation between a diet high in saturated fat and the benefits of fish oil supplementation.
The study was conducted by scientists from a range of institutions led by William C. Stanley, Ph.D., from the University of Maryland-Baltimore. It concluded that even though the benefits of fish oil for the heart are known, these benefits can be canceled out when a high saturated fat diet results in the fat levels in the heart blocking out the heart benefits of the fish oil taken.
The reason, it was concluded, was because the fat blocked out the capacity of the heart cells to absorb the helpful fats in the fish oil.
This study was conducted on rats which already had heart problems, so its difficult to know of these conclusions can be applied to people who take Omega 3 capsules but who dont have any heart disease.
But even if you don't have heart problems now, and you do take your Omega 3 fish oil supplements you still have good reasons why you ought to be eating a diet low in saturated fats. There are well known reasons why you ought to be avoiding too much fat.
So if you do that you get both the health benefits of a low fat diet along with the health benefits of those healthy polyunsaturated Omega 3 fats from your fish oil supplements, so you're getting the best of both worlds.
