Almost anyone from any walk of life no matter their sex, race, IQ, or their income can become addicted to smoking cigarettes if they are ever irresponsible enough to try them. A smoking addiction can affect anyone at all. Once a person tries cigarettes and they like that feeling they get from the nicotine and the smoking sensation, they can be hooked emotionally quickly as well as physically. It all depends on the person. Some people can smoke very few cigarettes in the beginning and their habit will escalate over the years. Some people that start will do so vigorously right away. Either way, almost anyone that does it for any length of time has a terrible time giving them up.

Today, even our president has been a smoker and the entire country has been following his progress in quitting, He freely admits that it has been tough trying to give them up and he also admits that he has slipped up on occasions and smoked anyway. In the past their were other presidents that smoked cigars for sure and possibly cigarettes too, so that just goes to show even the leader of our country whom we trust to run this great nation can fall prey to tobacco and become addicted. Of course, in the past there was nearly the social stigma attached to this habit as there is now.

So, how is it that just because a person might try smoking when they are young and inexperienced in life, yet continues to do it even after they are older and they are certain about what it will do to their health? You would think that a smart person would have the sense to quit, but why is it that so many of them can not or will not? It is all about the addiction. Addiction does not care how smart you might be in every other aspect of your life. This is the same reason that some very intelligent people get hooked on other drugs like cocaine, meth, and prescription drugs as well. When the body and the mind becomes accustomed to having a certain chemical, it will not let the addicted one rest until it gets what it wants. Just like your mouth goes dry when you are thirsty and your stomach will growl when you are hungry, the mind is not contented until it has a fix whether it be one of these other drugs or nicotine.

It really only takes a few days for the nicotine from tobacco to be eliminated from the body, but the emotional attachment is the hardest part to conquer. People can battle with this part of the tobacco addiction even years after they have ceased to have any nicotine. So, just because you consider yourself a very intelligent person, if you ever start smoking and continue until your health suffers from it, you might not have been as completely smart as you thought you were.
