Determine what causes the outbreaks. It can sometimes be something that you take in such as nuts, chocolate, caffeine or to much alcohol. You can monitor your daily diet by keeping a food journal to help you easily determine if food indeed triggers it and if so, which ones.

Eat a healthy well-balanced diet. You should have a lot of protein, fiber and iron. Regularly take vitamins supplements to make sure you get all the nutrients you need. Amino acids and lysine whether taken as a pill or applied as a cream, take care of the symptoms.

Find a support group. Having friends who can genuinely empathize with you minimizes the stress of dealing with a problem with a social stigma. There are numerous online communities that you can join including dating sites where you can socialize with other similarly afflicted individuals.

Abstain from sex. During an outbreak or when you are experiencing symptoms which are associated with an outbreak, do not engage in sexual intercourse. You would not want to infect your partner with the virus.
