Digestive disorders like acid reflux can be discomforting but it is good to know that a little diet change can help you in avoiding disorders in digestion. Preventing acid reflux for example may take a few changes with your lifestyle and your diet to be able to enjoy your meals.

If you are one of those who most likely experience this condition, you can find lots of information about preventing acid reflux and if you are determined to stop this discomfort, you will find that the preventive measures for this condition will not only relieve you from many digestive disorders but will also help you live a healthier life.

Acid reflux tends to recur in some people who are prone to developing this condition, so if you are bugged by this disorder, find out what causes this condition to show up. Most often, it is about the food you eat.

1. Avoiding the Foods that Trigger Acid Reflux

When acid in the stomach travels back to the esophagus, this can irritate its linings of the digestive tract thus causing pain and discomfort. In preventing acid reflux, it is important therefore to avoid foods that are either very acidic or those that takes time for the stomach to digest - because the stomach needs to produce more gastric juice to digest the food.

Acidic foods are major culprits in the occurrence of acid in the esophagus and although it is recommended to have lots of vegetables and fruits in your diet, you must at the same time avoid vegetables and fruits that are highly acidic. Among these are oranges, citrus, lemon, pineapple, grapefruit and tomatoes. You may also want to avoid prepared products made from tomato. Chocolates, peppermint, chili powder and some spices can also trigger this digestive disorder, thus you may want to avoid these as well as prepared products having them.

Fatty foods as well as fried foods should also be avoided. Aside from these, there are also beverages that may stimulate the release of more acid in the stomach and these include alcohol, coffee and other beverages that have caffeine.

Foods that can help you in preventing acid reflux include vegetables and fruits that are high in fiber, except of course those acidic ones, and whole grains. Drinking plenty of water will also help you prevent this condition as well as promote a healthy digestion.

2. Changing Bad Habits

Aside from food, there are habits that you can change to help you avoid acid reflux. Avoid eating too much at one time. You can take smaller but frequent meals to avoid too much pressure on your digestive muscles. Avoid lying down after meals, and avoid eating before going to bed at night.

Smoking can also worsen acid reflux and heartburn, as it tends to stimulate the stomach to produce more acid. At the same time, it prevents proper functioning of the digestive organs and muscles.

You can actually start preventing acid reflux by making your own menu and planning your own diet without the foods that trigger it. You can actually find some helpful list of foods that you should avoid in preventing digestive disorders. Aside from starting with your food, gradually change your eating habits as well, including habits that are generally harmful to your health.
