Relief from acid reflux may involve choosing your food to correcting bad habits after eating. If you are suffering from acid reflux and other digestive problems, you might not enjoy eating as you may feel pain in the chest as well as difficulty in swallowing and it can be troublesome. To help you find relief from acid reflux, here are some ways to prevent, avoid and help alleviate the symptoms of this condition.

Choosing your food

Food plays a major role in alleviating or aggravating the symptoms of acid reflux. There are foods that may irritate your esophagus, foods that prompt the stomach to produce more acid, especially foods that are not easily digested, and foods that may aggravate other symptoms of acid reflux, thus it is important to be informed what are the foods to avoid when you are suffering from acid reflux.

Among the most common foods that you might want to avoid or limit consumption are fatty and fried foods, which are usually found in fast foods; acidic fruits such as citrus, grapefruits, oranges and tomato; spices and peppermint, and chocolates. Caffeinated beverages as well as alcoholic drinks are also associated with the weakening of the muscle responsible for preventing acid from the stomach to go back up to the esophagus, so you might also want to avoid that.

Correcting bad habits after eating

Bad eating habits are also culprits in acid reflux and if you want to get relief from this condition, you might want to change some eating habits as well. Eating heavy meals can be a common trigger of acid reflux especially if you are lying down after the meal or having it before bedtime. This indeed can cause digestion problems and can also lead to obesity. Eating in smaller portions throughout the day and avoiding overeating would help you find relief from acid reflux. Standing for at least 45 minutes after eating would also be helpful.

Obesity and smoking

Obesity and too much unwanted fat in the stomach may give your body more pressure in the abdominal area and can lead to pushing back the contents of your stomach back to the esophagus. If you suspect that your weight is a factor, you can start planning your exercise routine and shedding off those extra fats. Smoking is also another factor that may worsen or cause your acid reflux. Aside from weakening the muscles used in digestion, it can also injure the esophagus, slow down digestion and stimulate the stomach to produce more acid.

Natural remedies

Slippery elm is said to be one of the most effective natural remedy for acid reflux. It is taken as a tea and is said to cure irritations in the digestive tract as well as protect the esophagus and the stomach from too much acid by providing them with a protective coating against possible irritants.

If you gradually change your diet and start with these ways to stop and avoid digestive problems, you will surely get relief from acid reflux and other problems associated with stomach acid. In the end, you are not just preventing and avoiding one problem but you are also leading to a healthier life.
